Kirk's Hot Ride - May 2009

Mark Wetterau's 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda

May 2009

Mark Wetterau brought this ‘Cuda to Street Concepts and it was stripped to bare metal. Following the concept drawing, a shaker hood was added, the door handles were shaved and the bumpers were smoothed. A new rear valence was created along with a custom grille, and H4 headlights were installed above a pair of clear turn signals. The firewall and inner fenders were filled and smoothed in preparation for the forthcoming Hemi. The red paint was custom mixed and expertly sprayed on all surfaces.
Lifting the shaker hood, one is greeted by the brawn of a 540ci aluminum Hemi with a motor plate, headers, MSD ignition, and dual Holley carbs topped with retro “bug eye” air cleaners. Tucked into the trunk is a 250hp shot of Nitrous, and unlike most show ponies, Mark HAS pushed the button and was “very happy” with the results.
Backing the massive mill is a Bowler-prepped 727 automatic, a Gear Vendors overdrive and a Winter’s quickchange. The front is locked in with a custom K-frame, tubular A-arms, rack & pinion steering, and another pair of the adjustable Edelbrocks. Wilwood calipers (six piston front, four rear) grab drilled and slotted rotors for supercar stopping power. 20” five spokes from GFG wrapped in Toyo tires.
The car sits “right” for a performance-inspired muscle car - not too low - and has the chassis components in place to contain the gobs of horsepower under the hood. The body retains the familiar lines and details that turned the ‘Cudas into one of the most desirable muscle cars of all time.
